At the interface between the block city and an open structure, a new district emerges that consciously links the city and the landscape
The urban structure of the eastern part of Karlín is composed of larger building ensembles, each with its own identity and character. These include the historic Invalidovna, the experimental Invalidovna housing estate, the Rustonka and Futurama complexes, and the Fragment residential building. The proposed Nový Karlín district follows a similarly coherent and distinctive approach.
The site is organised into two generous perimeter blocks with semi-private inner courtyards, complemented by a pair of freestanding landmark buildings. The square blocks define a central park that cuts across the site, linking the direction from the metro station to the sports and recreational area on the eastern edge. On the northern side, along a new transversal street, the structure is completed by a row of buildings that continues the existing, unfinished block of the Olympik Hotel. The proposed urban layout deliberately minimises corner conditions and is shaped with an emphasis on optimal daylighting of individual façades. The architectural language of the perimeter blocks is unified through the use of red and brown brick tones, while the landmark freestanding buildings are distinguished by a contrasting and unconventional green colour expression.
